The Last Day of November

/ / photos from sometime back in October / /

“It was November--the month of crimson sunsets, parting birds, deep, sad hymns of the sea, and passionate wind-songs in the pines.

Anne roamed through the pineland alleys in the park and, as she said, let that great sweeping wind blow the fogs out of her soul.”

Because I want to be at the beach right now.

Photos from Tybee Island, GA // Summer 2013

Really. This dark-before-5 pm and cold-enough-there's-icicles-on-the-mailbox weather is not my favorite. No, I'd much rather have sunny and warm and slightly breezy, thank you very much. Oh well. If it were nice outside I'd have a hard time keeping myself focused on studying (and I'm having a bit of last semester-itis as it is).
Studying. Yes, that is the reason that you probably won't be hearing from me much in the next 7 weeks or so. After that I'll be finished with school!

7 weeks. Yikes.

So anyway, here is what's up lately:
Reading // textbooks, emails, and more textbooks.
Watching // Once Upon a Time. I've become hooked. And I'm only on season 1.
Doing // lots of paperwork for exam applications.
Listening // no Christmas music yet. I firmly believe it must wait until December 1st. In the meantime, I've been alternating between two bands, the fabulous As Isaac and the great Rend Collective Experiment's album Campfire.

And right now As Isaac has a free sampler on NoiseTrade. Run, go download it now, and tip the lovely people. You won't be sorry.

Wow, I'm feeling chatty today. But I must return to the books so I now say TTFN!

Baby H | Newborn Baby Photography West Kentucky

This summer, I got to meet little baby H, the first son of one of my cousins. As with all babies, and as you can see, he is pretty cute, if I do say so myself as an completely impartial cousin.  It was my first time photographing a newborn and it only makes me want to do more!

So, after I get my fancy, shiny new camera in a couple months, I know of a certain photographer who would *love* to take pictures of any littles you may know. :)

Anyway, enjoy the cuteness!

Drawing with Light | a tutorial

This summer I got the chance to play with my Grandfather's DSLR. I've wanted to try light drawing for a while to see how it worked, so one warm, mosquito-filled night I took the camera, a tripod, and a flashlight out to the backyard.
If you would like to try it yourself, here's how I did it:

1. Wait until it's beginning to get dark. The first two photos were taken with the outdoor lights on, so it's still completely doable with some light, but you will see the person holding the flashlight.

2. Put the camera on the tripod and set a long shutter speed. I used a 10 second exposure, but you can experiment to see what works best.

3. Start the exposure and run out in front of the camera, keeping your flashlight turned off.

4. Now, turn your flashlight on and start drawing! If you write a word, either turn off the flashlight between letters, or write in in cursive. However you write your word, you will either have to draw the word backwards, or flip the photo in your photo editing program later, or your word will be backwards. I'm not  talented enough to write backwards, so I just flipped the photos in Photoshop. :)

5. Have fun and experiment! Try different words, shapes, letters, colors of light, stand still, or move around. There are no wrong ways to do it, so try anything!

Moo. | Southern IL Farm Photography

Back in October, our church group went to a farm.

The farm to do list consisted of:

-petting the kittens and bunnies
-getting scratched by said bunnies
-feeding the goats and sheep
-riding the horses
-going on the hayride
-giving the calf a bottle
-predicting the weather with the caterpillars
-letting the pig loose and chasing it into the horse pen
-finishing off the perfect fall day by drinking the sweetest red kool-aid you'll ever taste and eating "homemade" cookies
