Five Things Friday

Happy last day of December January! Why I just tried to type December, I have no idea. I still find myself trying to write 2013 so maybe that's why. Anyway, here's five of my favorite things as of this week.

[1] This pin.

[2] My new lens. I'm totally in love with it. The low aperture creates such lovely bokeh so it is fabulous for portraits.

[3] This wedding post from Allix B. Photography. Just love it.

[4] This senior session from Wyn Wiley Photography. I found this through pinterest and have spent awhile looking through his blog. The light is aaaaamaaazing.

[5] This arrangement of a song from the movie Frozen. Have you seen it? I went twice, which is extremely rare as I only go to the movies about twice a year. During the second time, I decided right then and there I had to learn the piano music.

The Tenth

Okay so I know this has nothing to do with photography, nor do I have any photos to show you today, but I thought I would share this story.

If you have the privilege of knowing me outside of the Internet, you probably know (or will find out soon) that I have become hooked on Doctor Who. Yes, I know. I had always said I wouldn't ever watch it because I did not understand it and thought it was some weird sci-f show. Which, honestly, it is, but that's not my point. However, on one rainy Sunday afternoon in November, curiosity got the better of me, and I haven't looked back since. Someone should have warned me of the emotional involvement. Or is that only me???

Anyway, a couple weeks ago, my sister and I were at the mall and we had run into some friends. While we were standing and talking, my sister started elbowing me in the ribs. She nodded towards the store which we were standing in front of, a men's suit store.

As it was close to closing time, an employee was kneeling down on the ground and locking the metal entrance gate. His back was to us but I could see he was wearing a long, tan overcoat. Red sneakers caught my eye as they stood out from under the edge of his coat.

Instantly, an image of this guy appeared in my head:

At last, after fiddling with the jangling keys, the man stood up and turned around. His brown hair stood up on end over his forehead and a dark red tie was tucked into a navy vest and matching pants. A slight smirk came over his face as he caught us watching him.

"The Doctor, Emily, he looks just like him!" My sister whispered.

The man in the red shoes tucked the keys into his coat pocket and began walking away. He glanced at us again, this time with a smile, as he continued walking away.  His open coat waved behind him like a cape, until he disappeared out the door of the mall.

My sister and I looked at each other in disbelief of what we just saw. We turned back to the conversation that had continued, the others completely unaware of what was going on around them.

Since then, we have waked past that same store several times in the last few weeks, hoping to see that man again, but we never had. Maybe we haven't recognized him in different clothing, or maybe he has a different work schedule, or maybe he was just a holiday employee.

Or maybe I've just been watching too much TV.

Portfolio Sessions | Western Kentucky Portrait + Lifestyle Photographer

If you know me offline, you've already seen this, but if not, hello! For those of you who live in the western Kentucky area, I'm doing sessions to build my portfolio and use on a future website.

Also, I've got a Facebook page now, so head on over and "like" it if you'd like. :)

Two things.

I got a new lens and finally (!) got to play with it on a rare sunny day this week. I love it. In case you're wondering, it's the Canon 50 mm 1.8 II. And it's lovely.

In other news, now that I'm finished with school, I have time to read for fun now! I haven't read any books that aren't textbooks for the past two years. It's time for that to change. Some of the books on my list so far include The Great Gatsby, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, and North and South.

Do you have any book recommendations?

Never Say Never

Lately, I've learned I should never say never.

When I was little, my mom would try to buy me jeans from the boy's department as they looked like the girl's jeans and were less money. I would firmly declare that no, I would never, ever, wear boy's clothes. And that was that.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago when I was out shopping and found a green, oversized hoodie that I really liked. It was on sale! However, it was in the guy's section of the store. But I really liked it and it didn't completely look like a men's sweatshirt, and it was on sale!

So I bought it. And I have worn it several times and love it (but I do have a fear of wearing it somewhere and seeing a guy wearing the same sweatshirt. You'll definitely hear about it if that happens.).

Even more recently, I have become a fan of Doctor Who. More like a slightly big fan. Or maybe a bit more than slightly.

For the last couple years, the British show has become quite popular and I never was interested in it. I saw all the promotional stuff out in the stores and just thought it was some weird thing & I didn't get it.

Well...

I bought a Doctor Who t-shirt last week. And I may or may not have, on occasion, starting talking in a British accent. Unconsciously.

So, the moral of this story is to never say never. I'll never do that again.

bought one of my favorite scarves while at the Urban Outfitters there in Savannah
spent time lounging at the hotel pool in Florida
took selfies in the mirror ceiling of an elevator
bought school supplies
went to Anthropologie for the first time
made strawberry basil water
took pictures of pretty clouds
ate "healthy" post-test college food

Cookies, cake, and pie, oh my! | Food Photography

The Desserts of Christmas | Emily Margaret Photography
Happy 2014 everyone! I don't have one of those fancy-schmancy year-in-review posts for today, but I'll have a round-up of some favorites ready soon. For now, enjoy some of the food photography that's been happening lately. If you're not into this kind of thing, or you're hungry, feel free to skip this post, although I cannot guarantee that you won't be hungry by the time you get to the end. :)

Apple pie is simply not complete without ice cream (or frozen yogurt in this case, but whatever you prefer).
